Dr Graeme Chown is managing director of Chown and Associates which was formed in 2020.  Dr Graeme Chown is a power systems control and operations specialist with over 30 years’ experience in the electricity industry. He has extensive experience in power system operations, generation scheduling and dispatch, interconnected operations, electricity markets, electricity regulation, ancillary services, energy storage, variable renewable energy studies, transmission pricing, power system studies, power system modelling, and power station control.

Graeme’s MSc and PhD were both on the topics of network frequency control, AGC and scheduling and economic dispatch. He has worked on variable renewable studies including storage for small and large islanded systems including Ireland, UK, 8 South Pacific Islands, Malawi and Mauritius, He has done variable renewable energy studies for larger interconnected systems including Nordic Interconnection and Southern Africa.  He has vast experience with EMS systems including unit commitment, scheduling and dispatch for all market types including original UK power pool, single buyer model, day-ahead market, fully constrained unit commitment and scheduling (including transmission constraints), intra-day bilateral trading arrangements, spot markets, balancing markets, transmission pricing and ancillary services in Pacific Islands Finland, Ireland, UK, South Africa, Southern African Power Pool, West African Power Pool, Tanzania, Abu Dhabi, Greater Mekong Sub-region, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Previously Graeme worked 15 years for Ricardo South Africa and 18 years for Eskom. He is a registered professional engineer with Engineering Council of South Africa and a member of the South African Institute for Electrical Engineers.
